If you’ve been dreaming of landscaping but don’t have the time to keep your plot in order, a dry creek is a real godsend. It doesn’t require any space at all, doesn’t need regular maintenance, and still looks very unusual – as if the water has temporarily left the channel.
Carefully placed on the edge of the pebble imitates the movement of an imaginary stream, and placed on the “banks” boulders with plants and does not cause doubt that this is a real creek. This effect will be strengthened by covering the stones with varnish, and fans of all the unusual will appreciate the solutions with the use of glow-in-the-dark paint.
Procedure for creating a dry creek
To create such a composition with your own hands, you need very little:
- Plan the shape of the creek and prepare the stones. The shape is easy to estimate and correct by marking its contours with sand. Slate, basalt and gneiss are good for blue tones, and granite, limestone and marble are good for red tones. Do not forget about the cobblestones for the design of the shoreline.
- Along the marked contour, dig a small ditch 15-30 cm deep and level the surface with a rake. To avoid the trouble of weeding the stream, cover the bed with a dark non-woven moisture- and air-permeable material, and then you can start laying pebbles and boulders in the direction from the banks to the center.
- Although the creek is dry, without a group of plants on the shoreline it is just a collection of rocks. Traditionally, the most similar to those found in the natural environment are chosen – bluish elongated leaves are preferred, as well as flowers in all shades from white to blue to purple. Extremely successful look lobelia, bearded iris, creeper, hosta, lily of the valley. Do not forget to take into account the compatibility of the selected plants with the conditions of temperature, humidity and lighting in your area.
- Optional, but very effective final step will be the use of small architectural forms – a decorative bridge or a Japanese garden lantern.
All that is required in the future – to care for planted plants and demonstrate the creation of the neighbors.
