The desire to settle in the office a couple of plants is quite understandable: spending most of our lives at work, we invariably seek to bring a little comfort to the environment. Another thing is that the office is still not a living space, which means that the flowers selected for it should not only please the eye, but also be loyal to the irregular care. Otherwise, after the January weekend in the workplace you will be welcomed by a herbarium.
The benefits of living plants in the office
In addition to their decorative function, houseplants are also famous for their care for their owner’s health. Everyone probably remembers from school biology course how the process of respiration in foliage is arranged. However, gas exchange is not as superficial as is commonly believed.
- Cleansing. By absorbing air, plants also trap harmful substances in their gaseous state. If your work involves harmful volatile substances, landscaping your office is a must!
- Humidification. By “exhaling”, the leaves evaporate a certain amount of moisture – a valuable quality for offices, because the air there is usually too dry.
- Enrichment. Together with moisture, essential oils are released into the air. Each type has its own set of properties – once you understand them, it is easy to take care of the right atmosphere in the office. For example, citrus essential oils invigorate and tune up the work environment, while geranium is widely known for its disinfectant properties.
In short, the benefits of plants in the office is difficult to feel at once, but it is definitely not worth neglecting. The main thing is not to forget to clean them from dust in time.
What plants to choose for the office?
The most unpretentious
One of the most useful and affordable candidates for residence is geraniums. It is completely unpretentious and often enjoys blooming. And the useful properties of geraniums are countless: its essential oil prevents the spread of lung diseases (which is especially important in the off-season), improves metabolism, relieves headaches and relieves fatigue.
Sansevieria Spartan conditions are quite usual: it steadfastly tolerates and dry air, and draughts, and artificial light, and infrequent watering, and the long absence of transplants. Moreover, excessive attention and frequent visits with a watering can even harm it. This flower grows not particularly fast, but it certainly can be classified as “planted and forgotten”. In the future you expect a large and beautiful plant, which, by the way, is not the first year in the trend and does not seem to give up positions. Meanwhile, the sanssévieria can also take care of you and your colleagues: it is known for its ability to actively absorb harmful substances and fight bacteria, cleaning the air and reducing the risk of spreading diseases.
Another “fashionable” plant for the office is zamioculcas. Like the previous representative of the green world, it prefers rare watering with a dry period from September to April. If you do not forget to wipe dust from the glossy leaves, it will become a chic decoration of the workplace.
Plants for a bright office
A few years ago, the main attribute of any store, pharmacy and other institutions was a palm tree. Living behind the “Iron Curtain,” our compatriots dreamed of seeing faraway countries. And in support of these dreams, date palms were sprouting all over the USSR. Now the available range of palm trees has greatly expanded, anyone can get a visa, but our compatriots remained faithful to their love of warm countries.
Palms feel good in spacious light rooms and gratefully grow up to the ceiling, bringing a piece of exoticism to the daily bustle. But they don’t like too dry air – they wake up homesick.
Dracaena, yucca and cordiline will gladly keep palm trees company. If you provide them with light placement and acceptable humidity, they will repay you with high growth and a lush crown. Often the croton completes this trio.
Plants for an office with north-facing windows
Spathiphyllum is becoming more and more common in offices, and no wonder. The plant does not require light, has beautiful broad foliage and willingly enjoys blooming. However, along with the placement in the penumbra Spathiphyllum prefers and regular watering. Therefore, if you choose it, make sure that in your absence there will be someone to look after it.
If there are humidifiers in the room, you can bring a maranta, stromanta, ctenantha or calathea to work. Artificial light is not a problem for these plants. But aglaonema is quite good with dry air. The variety of species of this flower is a great choice for lovers of large plants, and the variegated leaves will be an exquisite decoration of the office interior.
Seemingly very exotic, orchids – namely hybrid phalaenopsis – can also become part of the work environment, and even artificial light will not be an obstacle to flowering. Nor can they suffer from dry air. The only requirement in the care that must be considered is watering by dipping. However, this procedure is required no more than once a week depending on the temperature.
Plants to improve air quality
The most famous representatives of this category are Diffenbachia, Philodendron, and Anthurium. The first two also reach a decent size, and the more green mass, of course, the better the effect. In addition to the ability to normalize water and gas exchange in the room, these plants are also distinguished by an enviable unpretentiousness in all respects.
If your team is dreaming of more humid air, and a stingy boss can’t afford the device, try to solve the problem with ferns, violets, cyclamen or cyperus.
Chlorophytum, Benjamin ficus and Scipandus are real “workhorses” in terms of cleaning the air from harmful substances. If your work is connected with synthetic finishing materials, chipboard furniture, these toilers will rid you of dangerous to health formaldehyde and benzene. Dracaena, which copes not only with benzene, but also with exhaust gases, is capable of similar miracles. And clivia, pelargonium and aspidistra can help protect your lungs from the smoke spread by smokers – just don’t forget to give them an occasional air bath, too, so the plants can get back to normal and recover.
Of course, each of the species has its own “useful” secrets, and to dwell on each of them separately. However, it is enough that plants in the office are a joy to the eye and help us to save energy in a busy work rhythm. Follow the elementary rules of care and they will delight others for a long time to come.
